[DeTomaso] Tie rod ends

I’m calling on the brain trust to help me out here. Here’s what’s happening: when I try to tighten the tapered stud nut the stud just turns and won’t pull the tapers together in the steering arm. 
I hope all this made sense to you guys. 
Any wisdom you can impart would be great.
