FWIW
While working on my 71 Ranchero ( cleaning up wiring under dash --- re routing +12V wire to Lentech  AOD overdrive lockout solenoid etc. ) again ran across a black box with electrical wires and vacuum lines attached. I had run across this box as well as wiring coming from speedometer cable, near steering column at floor under carpet. I had always wondered about what each did. I didn't know they were connected.I did not pay much attention to them, thou Torino I bought in July of 70 has same. So does other 70/71 Torinos, 701/2 Falcon, and 70 LTDs I have or had. But this time vacuum lines had been chewed in two by mice.. So "need to know" became more important .
What I found out follows:

Yes, this emission system can betotally removed and you would never know it. It is a NOx device that onlyallows the vacuum advance to work under certain conditions. When the outsidetemp. is below 60 degrees or so the vacuum advance is allowed, when it's abovethat temp, the vacuum advance is only allowed when the vehicle is travelingaround 30mph or faster. The hardware and wiring to do this varied from '70 -'72but basically you have a temp. sensor, a sensor on the trans. and a controlmodule with a solenoid valve for the vacuum. For automatics the trans. sensoris a line pressure switch and for manuals it's just a mechanical switch thattells when it's in high gear. The control module switches the vacuum source onor off to the vacuum advance depending on the temp. and/or speed. This emissionsystem is a 'tack-on' like most of the first-generation types and is not a partof the main wiring harness.

Here's a diagram of the layout of that system:

I guess this was not used in a 71 US sold Pantera

  Bud, Mike,
Greetings!

In 70+ Ford started doing all sorts of whiz bang stuff to control smog..........  This could be something like that.   I've never seen this one, but I never really have paid attention to or worked with the Torino's in 71+ other than drivetrain bits.
Is there a Ford number on the plastic box?   If you can get me that I'll look it up in the MPC..... otherwise try a copy of the 71 vacuum diagrams or even the shop manual.
I'm guessing that it is a device to alter the vacuum to the distributor during operation.....the electrical connector could be tach feed or from some switch on the engine......  advance timing when no engine load, retard when under heavy load to prevent pinging and misfiring.

Hi Mike,

I can't believe I have owned Torinos since 1970 and still do not know what this item is nor what its function is.
Do you have a clue? Photos of 71 Ranchero item.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give,
