[DeTomaso] NPC leaked AA batteries and solution

I have a $150 inspection light that has been useful:

 that quit working.  It has a battery drawer with 4 AA batteries.  

I pulled the drawer out and some of the batteries had leaked.  I am seeing leaking AA and AAA batteries more than I ever recall in the past?

Brushed off the corrosion and replaced the batteries, looked OK, still didn't work.
Set the empty battery drawer in a backing soda and water mix for maybe 3 hours, didn't look different, but the light works now.  I guess a thin layer of corrosion was enough to keep it from working.  Saved $150.
