Actually, some people did do exactly that.

My 2511 is a January 1972 car, two pod Dash and flat decklid. When purchased it had the large rear steel bumper, front rubber bumper and the turn signal light pods had been added. 

Obviously not correct for such an early car. However, in my discussions with some of the old timers I was told that some owners, upon the release of the L model cars, felt their early chrome bumper cars were now dated as being the old version. So they installed the late bumpers.

I guess that makes some sense to some people, but as the years have gone by this modification now seems to be bass ackwards.
