[DeTomaso] NPC: Maserati Kyalami - Rebadged/Repowered Longchamp?

Trivia for the day.  When I was last having my ZF tended to at Vintage Racing Motors in Redmond, Wa., where all of the Seattle area tech millin/billionaires have their toys taken care of.  Byron showed me a few of the cars around the shop, including a 1962 (?) Lotus formula 1 car,  1958 Ferrari Testa Rosa, 1955 Mercedes 300 SLR Roadster and a Maserati 450S.  The 450S was having a good bit of work done and most of the front body work was off of the car.  The sight of the huge motor in that little aluminum body and tubular frame was quite a sight.  Bryon showed me a little 'spy glass', a little round pieces of glass about 1-1.5" in diameter, in the leading edge of the left rear inner fender just under the drivers left elbow.  He would look through this spy glass to check the remaining tire tread to know when he needed to pit for tires.

I love going up there as there is always something rare and interesting to see.

Jim,

Early versions were 4.7L, and later were 4.9L, still relatively small. The motor was developed in 1954 as a 4.5L for the 450S race car, of which only nine were built. In that guise it made 400 hp, quite a lot for 1954. 

The street motors were detuned for greater torque at the expense of HP, and made in the region of 290-320 hp.

I agree, it should be able to spin much higher than 5900?
