[DeTomaso] How come Alejandro de Tomaso called his most famous car a Pantera ?

Originally they were going to use the Cobra name. Early magazine reports of the prototype call it that. 

I believe it was Rick McBride, the guy who did the initial press photography of the yellow prototype, who first suggested Pantera? Could be urban legend though….
