[DeTomaso] How come Alejandro de Tomaso called his most famous car a Pantera ?

Maybe it had something to do with the mindset of Ford and Lincoln Mercury
at the time.  Lincoln's theme catch phrase at the time was "the sign of the
cat". A popular car in their lineup at the time was the Cougar. Maybe they
wanted a another cat name with a foreign twist.
