[DeTomaso] spare tire/wheel

A 'compact' high pressure spare will easily fit in the rear trunk insert although not in the molded well, and with some rearranging, it may fit in the front trunk as well. To carry a 15" high-pressure spare up front in a '72 L, I had to reroute the clutch hydraulic feed line, and re-clock the power booster's front cover by 90 degrees so the vacuum booster hose boss is nearer the inner fender well. It also required a dropped battery. A stock collapsible spare also fits up front and in back without rearranging. Nice to have options.
Note that to carry a flat or damaged full size tire in the rear trunk with the liner, you'll need to add a 12" or so long bungee cord to your on-board tool kit, to restrain the trunk lid, as neither a flat/damaged stock front nor rear wheel & tire will fit with the deck lid latched. Gr-4 racers did not use a fiberglas trunk insert. Instead they had a small steel bracket that sat directly on the ZF case and (due to LeMans rules) held a 14" x 15" full size spare racing tire with the decklid fully closed. The brackets are long NLA so you will have to fabricate your own, but they are not complicated.
Note also that due to different ODs of available spares- either stock collapsible or high-pressure, actual use of,one on the road in back will rapidly wear your ZF's light duty limited-slip clutches, as well as the sketchy-tread spares which only last about 50 miles at 50mph max (my direct experience). But that's usually enough to get you to some help. Carrying a POCA Address & Phone List of your friends plus a cell phone on board is better than AAA in many cases.
High-pressure spares need 45-55 psi inflation pressure. If yours proves to be low when you need it, VW used to offer an attachment that when screwed into the engine in place of one spark plug, allowed an idling engine to reinflate the spare back to specs. Off-roaders also use such devices that are also easily fabricated. They are an option for spare tire inflator cans (hard to find nowadays) for low tires that have proven to be often filled with explosive PROPANE! Read the label! J DeRyke

I haven't carried a spare for many years, either in the Pantera or the
Cobra. I've used AAA for my backup.
But...
My Cobra recently started experiencing vapor lock. It stranded me in
Tallahassee over Thanksgiving break. I was 500 miles from home. I
called AAA and waited for the tow truck. It was going to be $1,800 to
get me and the car home, but at that point, I didn't care. I was on
the side of the road for over an hour. The tow truck driver finally
called and refused to tow me. They said it would be "too
uncomfortable" to drive that far. I called my wife, who helped find a
U-Haul truck and auto transport. I had originally called U-Haul, but
the national number couldn't find anything. Long story, but I finally
got on the road, 7 hours after I entered Tallahassee.
Last weekend, I took the car to a show about 5 miles away. I figured
it would be okay, since it wouldn't have time to overheat. But it
happened again. It died just as I parked the car. I figured it would
cool enough during the show, and it did enough to get me going. It
died again 2 miles from the show. I called AAA again. This time, the
tow truck driver refused the tow and cancelled my AAA case. Nobody
told me they cancelled the call, so I waited for 2 hours for a truck
that would never show. I finally gave up on them. I walked across the
street (it died near a gas station), and bought a small gas can and a
soft drink in a plastic container. I poured gas from the gas can to
the soft drink container, and from there into the vent tubes. I
figured I could limp it for 3 miles, which I did. Filling the fuel
bowls was actually enough gas to get me all the way home.
So, I don't trust AAA anymore. It may be that the local tow truck
companies are unreliable, probably due to Covid, but it doesn't really
matter.
If I had a flat tire, and if I had a spare, I could use the spare, and
drive home with the deck lid open. I wouldn't do that for 500 miles,
but it wouldn't be a problem for short distances. And if I still ran
the rear trunk, I'd carry the 90's Lincoln compact spare.
Btw, I now think the vapor lock is a hardened gas line that is sucking
air. This replica is almost 30 years old, so it probably has gas lines
that are not ethanol friendly. I have the car safely in my garage, so
I'm going to go through the entire fuel system.

After having some wheel and tire "issues", I bought a late 90's

The OEM compact spare tire also matches quite closely to the
diameter
of the rubber on my GT5.

My recommendation is simply adonata.
There is no place to put a full sized wheel and tire in the
car.
So,
if you get a flat and install the spare, do you plan to
leave the
flat and the wheel on the side of the road and drove away?A
Of
course not.
So, you will get a tow truck in any case. So no need for a
sparea|.

My recommendation is simply adonata.
There is no place to put a full sized wheel and tire in

So,
if you get a flat and install the spare, do you plan to
leave the

away?A
Of
course not.
So, you will get a tow truck in any case. So no need for
a
sparea|.
