FYI - Jeff6559

The Harbor Freight jack stands that we've all bought, borrowed or seen in
our friends' garages are being recalled due to a risk of collapsing under
load. Go check yours immediately.

In a recall filed with the NHTSA on March 20 of this year, Harbor Freight
explains that certain 6-ton jack stands have the potential to disengage
their support pawl under shifting weight, causing the stand to drop
suddenly. A second recall, filed May 3, extends the recall to 3-ton jack
stands. The defect is attributed to aging tooling at the factory that
produced the jack stands.

The recall document says that the problem could affect more than 450,000
6-ton jack stands produced between 2013 and 2019 and nearly 1.3 million
3-ton jack stands produced between 2012 and 2020. These jack stands were
sold under the Pittsburg brand name, and can be identified by item numbers
56371 or 61196 on 3-ton models, and 61197 on 6-ton models.

Harbor Freight urges anybody in possession of affected jack stands to
return them to the store in exchange for a gift card equal to the price of
the stands. Any unsold jack stands covered by the recall have been removed
from stores. Check on your buddies and spread the word around?these jack
stands are ubiquitous, and a failure like this could be fatal.

Not the same stand, but just show anything can break so have a backup (my failure would have been an OSHA near miss)
As for the pawl type, don't they have provisions for a thru pin at several heights? (maybe I'm thinking of the tube type)

Thanks, Jeff--
Heard about this. Hard to believe anybody would gamble with their
life buying Harbor Freight jack stands for regular use.
No serious tool-user buys anything there for this very reason.

Nice of you to remind everyone. We checked right away after getting the HF
email, and 8 of our race team jacks were on the recall list, and have
already been returned. It is scary to think how many of our crew and
weekend volunteers have been under cars with those jack stands.
Thankfully, our main endurance sports car now has air jacks -- with the
safety inserts for when crew are under the car. Not only is it faster, but
it is much safer.

Your advise is very, very sound. We train everyone to never be under the
car when things are rushed, and never to be under a car with less than all
four jackstands solidly in place. Even without a jack failure, we have had
the cars shift when the fueler pushes on the rear and lose a jack stand.
If the other three weren't there, it could have fallen on crew.

Thanks for the email.

you know I would like to buy American not Chinese but it seems we currently
do not have a choice.
I have bought American name brand and it is labeled made in China.
So I agree to buy the best Jack Stand.
The question is who makes American quality not don't buy Harbor Freight.

you know I would like to buy American not Chinese but it seems we
currently do not have a choice.
I have bought American name brand and it is labeled made in China.
So I agree to buy the best Jack Stand.
The question is who makes American quality not don't buy Harbor
   Freight.

     A A A FYI - Jeff6559
A A A The Harbor Freight jack stands that we've all bought,
     borrowed or
A A A seen in our friends' garages are being recalled due to a
     risk of
A A A collapsing under load. Go check yours immediately.
A A A In a recall filed with the NHTSA on March 20 of this year,
     Harbor
A A A Freight explains that certain 6-ton jack stands have the
     potential
A A A to disengage their support pawl under shifting weight,
     causing the
A A A stand to drop suddenly. A second recall, filed May 3,
     extends the
A A A recall to 3-ton jack stands. The defect is attributed to
     aging
A A A tooling at the factory that produced the jack stands.
A A A The recall document says that the problem could affect more
     than
     A A A 450,000 6-ton jack stands produced between 2013 and 2019 and
     nearly
     A A A 1.3 million 3-ton jack stands produced between 2012 and
     2020. These
A A A jack stands were sold under the Pittsburg brand name, and
     can be
     A A A identified by item numbers
     A A A 56371 or 61196 on 3-ton models, and 61197 on 6-ton models.
A A A Harbor Freight urges anybody in possession of affected jack
     stands
A A A to return them to the store in exchange for a gift card
     equal to the
A A A price of the stands. Any unsold jack stands covered by the
     recall
A A A have been removed from stores. Check on your buddies and
     spread the
A A A word aroundathese jack stands are ubiquitous, and a failure
     like
     A A A this could be fatal.

FYI - Jeff6559

The Harbor Freight jack stands that we've all bought, borrowed or seen in our friends' garages are being recalled due to a risk of collapsing under load. Go check yours immediately.

In a recall filed with the NHTSA on March 20 of this year, Harbor Freight explains that certain 6-ton jack stands have the potential to disengage their support pawl under shifting weight, causing the stand to drop suddenly. A second recall, filed May 3, extends the recall to 3-ton jack stands. The defect is attributed to aging tooling at the factory that produced the jack stands.

The recall document says that the problem could affect more than 450,000 6-ton jack stands produced between 2013 and 2019 and nearly 1.3 million 3-ton jack stands produced between 2012 and 2020. These jack stands were sold under the Pittsburg brand name, and can be identified by item numbers
56371 or 61196 on 3-ton models, and 61197 on 6-ton models.

Harbor Freight urges anybody in possession of affected jack stands to return them to the store in exchange for a gift card equal to the price of the stands. Any unsold jack stands covered by the recall have been removed from stores. Check on your buddies and spread the word around?these jack stands are ubiquitous, and a failure like this could be fatal.

you know I would like to buy American not Chinese but it seems we currently do not have a choice.
I have bought American name brand and it is labeled made in China.
So I agree to buy the best Jack Stand.
The question is who makes American quality not don't buy Harbor Freight.

Quickjack is another Chinese product (under the Bendpak name), I had heard despite looking so, they are not that portable being cumbersome and heavy. Why not get a much more versatile full on scissor lift for similar money? I have one and made a couple full length ramps to be able to clear the lift with the race car, but now I can also just park any car over it, so no loss of garage space.

Julian

Speaking of lifts - Kelly has given me the green light on building another
garage. Planning on two lifts - and planning to feel very spoilt. Turned
66 yesterday!

Quickjack is another Chinese product (under the Bendpak name), I had heard
despite looking so, they are not that portable being cumbersome and heavy.
Why not get a much more versatile full on scissor lift for similar money? I
have one and made a couple full length ramps to be able to clear the lift
with the race car, but now I can also just park any car over it, so no loss
of garage space.

   FYI - Jeff6559
The Harbor Freight jack stands that we've all bought, borrowed or seen
   in
our friends' garages are being recalled due to a risk of collapsing
   under
   load. Go check yours immediately.
In a recall filed with the NHTSA on March 20 of this year, Harbor
   Freight
explains that certain 6-ton jack stands have the potential to disengage
their support pawl under shifting weight, causing the stand to drop
suddenly. A second recall, filed May 3, extends the recall to 3-ton
   jack
stands. The defect is attributed to aging tooling at the factory that
   produced the jack stands.
The recall document says that the problem could affect more than
   450,000
6-ton jack stands produced between 2013 and 2019 and nearly 1.3 million
3-ton jack stands produced between 2012 and 2020. These jack stands
   were
sold under the Pittsburg brand name, and can be identified by item
   numbers
   56371 or 61196 on 3-ton models, and 61197 on 6-ton models.
Harbor Freight urges anybody in possession of affected jack stands to
return them to the store in exchange for a gift card equal to the price
   of
the stands. Any unsold jack stands covered by the recall have been
   removed
from stores. Check on your buddies and spread the word around?these
   jack
stands are ubiquitous, and a failure like this could be fatal.

Not the same stand, but just show anything can break so have a backup
(my failure would have been an OSHA near miss)
As for the pawl type, don't they have provisions for a thru pin at
several heights? (maybe I'm thinking of the tube type)

   FYI - Jeff6559
The Harbor Freight jack stands that we've all bought, borrowed or seen
in our friends' garages are being recalled due to a risk of collapsing
under load. Go check yours immediately.
In a recall filed with the NHTSA on March 20 of this year, Harbor
Freight explains that certain 6-ton jack stands have the potential to
disengage their support pawl under shifting weight, causing the stand
to drop suddenly. A second recall, filed May 3, extends the recall to
3-ton jack stands. The defect is attributed to aging tooling at the
factory that produced the jack stands.
The recall document says that the problem could affect more than
   450,000 6-ton jack stands produced between 2013 and 2019 and nearly 1.3
million 3-ton jack stands produced between 2012 and 2020. These jack
stands were sold under the Pittsburg brand name, and can be identified
   by item numbers
   56371 or 61196 on 3-ton models, and 61197 on 6-ton models.
Harbor Freight urges anybody in possession of affected jack stands to
return them to the store in exchange for a gift card equal to the price
of the stands. Any unsold jack stands covered by the recall have been
removed from stores. Check on your buddies and spread the word
around?these jack stands are ubiquitous, and a failure like this could
   be fatal.

   Thanks, Jeff--
Heard about this. Hard to believe anybody would gamble with their
life buying Harbor Freight jack stands for regular use.
No serious tool-user buys anything there for this very reason.

Nice of you to remind everyone. We checked right away after getting
   the HF
email, and 8 of our race team jacks were on the recall list, and have
already been returned. It is scary to think how many of our crew and
weekend volunteers have been under cars with those jack stands.
Thankfully, our main endurance sports car now has air jacks -- with the
safety inserts for when crew are under the car. Not only is it faster,
   but
   it is much safer.
Your advise is very, very sound. We train everyone to never be under
   the
car when things are rushed, and never to be under a car with less than
   all
four jackstands solidly in place. Even without a jack failure, we have
   had
the cars shift when the fueler pushes on the rear and lose a jack
   stand.
If the other three weren't there, it could have fallen on crew.
   Thanks for the email.
   Regards,
   Steven G. Lisa, Esq.

you know I would like to buy American not Chinese but it seems we
   currently
   do not have a choice.
I have bought American name brand and it is labeled made in China.
So I agree to buy the best Jack Stand.
The question is who makes American quality not don't buy Harbor
   Freight.

you know I would like to buy American not Chinese but it seems we
currently do not have a choice.
I have bought American name brand and it is labeled made in China.
So I agree to buy the best Jack Stand.
The question is who makes American quality not don't buy Harbor
      Freight.

A A A The recall document says that the problem could affect
   more
        than
        A A A 450,000 6-ton jack stands produced between 2013 and 2019
   and
A A A Harbor Freight urges anybody in possession of affected
   jack
        stands
A A A to return them to the store in exchange for a gift card
        equal to the
A A A price of the stands. Any unsold jack stands covered by the
        recall
A A A have been removed from stores. Check on your buddies and
        spread the
A A A word aroundathese jack stands are ubiquitous, and a
   failure
        like
        A A A this could be fatal.

Check on your buddies and spread the word
around?these jack stands are ubiquitous, and a failure like this could
   be fatal.

Quickjack is another Chinese product (under the Bendpak name), I had
heard despite looking so, they are not that portable being cumbersome
and heavy. Why not get a much more versatile full on scissor lift for
similar money? I have one and made a couple full length ramps to be
able to clear the lift with the race car, but now I can also just park
any car over it, so no loss of garage space.
