What a crock of shit.... used car salesman mentality and more likely wants to prevent prospective buyers doing any research, or he's got it on consignment and wants to avoid being cut off by someone tracking down the owner and contacting direct.

I contacted the seller and he said:

If you and I can have a quick conversation, I'll be glad to give you the VIN. We don't give out VIN numbers to everyone. We've had them counterfeited in the past and end up on other cars out of state.

I told him that he made it look like a Nigerian scammer ad.

It’s apparently a dealership so it’s probably legit. I would approach them via their dealership rather than ebay if I was shopping though.
