[DeTomaso] Exhaust popping

Probably good advice even if you don’t smell gas. It may be too late by then, and rebuilding the carb isn’t usually mentioned as a regular maintenance task.

Don’s car caught fire. My engine started running progressively worse, and it flunked the emissions testing spectacularly. I hand-carried it to Dennis Quella, who expressed amazement that an engine would run with that carb installed… everything was plugged with varnish, all the circuits completely blocked. It took a looooot of work to clear all the gunk out (hint – throw the carb away and buy a new one… you’ll be quite a bit of money ahead!!!) So flushing it every few years could prevent fires, keep your engine running better, and avoid an expensive rebuild because you’ve left it too long.

Fred,

If you haven't rebuilt your carburetor in the last 5 years, then you need to rebuild it.

If you are smelling gas... you have a serious problem. Check for leaks before you have a fire...

The rubber on the accelerator pump on mine cracked and caused a fire. Luckily I caught it with a Halon fire extinguisher before things got out of control.

Rebuild it, re-tune it, and put it on your list to rebuild your carburetor every 5 years.

Best regards,

When I back off of the accelerator, the exhaust makes a popping noise. It isn't a backfire in the carb. Wonder if the noise is caused by way too rich setting resulting in fuel detonating in the exhaust pipes. Car is running uneven and I can smell gas inside the car. Do I need a carb rebuild or ??? Please email me. Thanks in advance. Fred Sent from Samsung tablet.
