Julian,

‘Tis true.  You ask the question ‘Why would De Tomaso...’ which answers the question right there. De Tomaso had nothing to do with it, or rather, Ford wanted De Tomaso to have nothing to do with it. Very deliberately, there is not a single reference to De Tomaso ANYWHERE on a US GTS. There are no logos, no script on the back, and they went so far as to produce a limited run of speedos and techs that were logo-free. All the sales literature said ‘Pantera GTS by Ghia’. Ghia badges replaced De Tomaso everywhere on the car, except the gauges. 

Divorce can be painful and ugly!
