I think the meaningful experiment would be to run one ZF with GL-5 oil and one with GL-4 and compare debris buildups.  Chuck, do you use GL-4 oil or GL-5?

  Dear Wayne,
Fret not.  Over thirty years and two Panteras and two ZFs

little accumulation of metal particles on the magnet just as you have.
Never was a ZF lube change without some noticeable accumulation.  ZF
experts tell that is normal.  I would say that your picture shows a
  normal
amount of debris.  It does not show any large nor medium chunky bits.
  It
will never come out clean when changed at normal intervals.  Have a
  good
nightcap this evening and rest well.

I change the oil in the Transaxle  last night and found metal particles
  on
the magnetic drain plug.  See attached photo.
The car has maybe 3,500 to 4,000 miles since the fluid was last
  changed.
There was no other foreign material in the container used to drain the
  fluid.
How  mush sleep should I be loosing over the amount of metal particles
  in
  the photo.
FWIW, I am using Castrol Limited Slip 80W-90 in the transaxle.
  Thanks
  Wayne
