[DeTomaso] REPLACEMENT ALTERNATOR RECOMMENDATIONS?

No. The battery was almost dead (he drove it for many miles with a dead alternator). When he installed a new alternator it went to work trying to charge the almost dead battery at the max possible rate. If it had been a proper alternator it would have charged at a proper rate. Because it was a too-powerful alternator it tried to charge at a much higher rate and set the car on fire.
