[DeTomaso] (detomaso) engine stalls on start up

Folks,Update:I do have a fuel filter!  Its inline between the hard line from fuel pump and the carb fuel intakes.  (sites right behind carb)  Its a small aluminum device with a 40 micron brass washable element.  I have not taken apart yet to clean out but that is next step.   Car still is a bit rough at idle but otherwise runs fantastic.  Thanks again for all your feedback!

Sounds like you picked up some debris from the gas tank that has plugged the idle circuit in the carb.

You can try removing the idle mixture screws out from each side of the carb and spraying carb cleaner in the holes. Three things; first count how many turns it takes to turn the idle mixture screws in until they stop, then write that down as you want to put the screws back in the same amount of turns. Two, there is a tiny gasket that looks like a bushing that goes around the screw. It usually looks like it is made of cork. It may or may not come out with the screw. If it does come out,put it back into the hole before you put the screws back in. If the the bushing does not come out be sure it does not fly away when you spray the carb cleaner in the hole, or if it does find it or get replacements. Three, wear eye protection so you do not get blasted by any carb spray that bounces back at you.

This may only temporarily fix your problem as it will move the debris out of the idle passages but it will still be in the carb most likely. If that is the case you will need to rebuild/ clean the carb.

Hope this helps, it sounds harder than it is.

Ps, get a fuel filter!

That's probably *not* happening here it is so rare but... older motors, even stock low miles ones may need attention.

   Folks,
   Update:
I do have a fuel filter! Its inline between the hard line from fuel
pump and the carb fuel intakes. (sites right behind carb) Its a small
aluminum device with a 40 micron brass washable element. I have not
taken apart yet to clean out but that is next step. Car still is a
bit rough at idle but otherwise runs fantastic.
Thanks again for all your feedback!

Sounds like you picked up some debris from the gas tank that has
plugged the idle circuit in the carb.
You can try removing the idle mixture screws out from each side of the
carb and spraying carb cleaner in the holes. Three things; first count
how many turns it takes to turn the idle mixture screws in until they
stop, then write that down as you want to put the screws back in the
same amount of turns. Two, there is a tiny gasket that looks like a
bushing that goes around the screw. It usually looks like it is made of
cork. It may or may not come out with the screw. If it does come
out,put it back into the hole before you put the screws back in. If the
the bushing does not come out be sure it does not fly away when you
spray the carb cleaner in the hole, or if it does find it or get
replacements. Three, wear eye protection so you do not get blasted by
any carb spray that bounces back at you.
This may only temporarily fix your problem as it will move the debris
out of the idle passages but it will still be in the carb most likely.
If that is the case you will need to rebuild/ clean the carb.
Hope this helps, it sounds harder than it is.
   Ps, get a fuel filter!

Sometimes the older pieces flake off and can settle in the oil pan and
jam the oil pump briefly and shear the timing pin which usually makes
the car not start at all but occasionally leads to binding where after
setting timing the timing wanders after starting.? That's probably
*not* happening here it is so rare but... older motors, even stock low
   miles ones may need attention.
