My experience has been that the ability to find a leak is proportional to the quality of “sniffer” the shop has. You are not going to see any visible leak unless it is huge. 

They will have to charge the system enough for it to function to find the leak. (Below a certain pressure the compressor will not turn on)

I bought a manifold gauge set at Harbor Freight for cheap.  With that you can determine if there is any 134 in the system or not and add the correct amount if you need to. 

I would probably charge the system myself then take it to a shop with a good sniffer to find the leak. 

A low-rise lift makes this work really easy
