[DeTomaso] No racing again at the 2017 POCA Fun Rally?

Dan,

It's a fact of life that tracks have had to adjust their operating model to stay alive, that means higher cost, more noise restrictions and in some cases private memberships. That survival model seems to be more prevalent on the leftist coast where people move close to existing facilities and promptly try to shut them down.

The reality is there are not many venues left where the Fun Rally can logistically be combined with a track event and even if it could noise restrictions would likely impact Pantera entries.

Reno was one of the options under consideration for the 2017 Fun Rally, but Reno-Fernley Raceway has not operated for 3-4 years now. That might change soon as I heard within the last week the facility has sold to a new owner who intends to invest and get it operational again, but no idea what cost will be to repave ad how that will be recovered in rental cost. Reno is growing rapidly now Tech industry is moving out of CA, so locally we are hopeful that the influx will provide enough racing/speed enthusiasts so the track can survive. Maybe hold out until 2018 and we'll see what we can do, but no promises because at the end of the day if enough racers don't step up then it can't go no matter what.

We the racers have heavily subsidized or sponsored a lot of the prior track events to make them viable. Bob Benson tried to get racers interested in a track event last year, I think he got 18 committed, way too few to make a viable event without some heavy sponsorship. Given that is 18 people out of the 250 or so who attend the Fun Rally, we have to accept the majority that have no interest in a track event and would rather piss the money away on an open bar. It's "Not my Fun Rally" model but I'm not going to go crying in the street because of it [😉] .

Following the model that Mr Shortt was trying to promote we should all get together and plan a Racers Chapter event or attend one of the Checkered Flag events at Willow Springs.

Julian

Ed, I want to be clear that my comments are in no way a personal attack at you.
I have no idea what happened to keep us from once again holding what I consider the centerpiece of a Pantera Fun Rally because, unlike you, I didn't commit time, energy and exposure to coordinating this complex endeavor.
Thank you for working on behalf of the Club.
But please do your best to ensure we don't go three consecutive years without a PANTERA track event.

</div>You can race, but you'll have to get with the SCCA in order to join their event that same weekend. SCCA race licensing and compliance. Its financially infeasible and not prudent for the majority of membership to subsidize a track event benefiting a very small portion of the membership. Track costs and insurance makes it cost prohibitive. Individual racers can get with the SCCA and race that weekend.

This will be a great event not to be missed.
