My 351 Cleveland acts as a great rear window defroster.... albeit a bit pricy!

It was a law for some if not all European countries that rear window defrosters be a standard installation on all cars. As with any lawmaking body, common sense was an alien concept. Forest

  Since I live in southern California , I have never needed to use my
  rear window defroster . As you mentioned , I also speculate that the
  engine would heat up the rear window as fast as the embedded wires in
  the glass .
