On our #4366 (a '72 L model), the screen is as Garth mentions but was nickel plated. I've seen some that are painted black; dunno if they're shiny underneath or not. Also note- early screens are slightly too wide to fit wide-body cars of the '80s. I tried this unsuccessfully on an '87 GT5-S. Unless you carefully trim the convoluted edge (on both side pieces) that fit against the body so as to narrow the parts & produce a wider opening.

Just another data point...
   #4033 has the all mesh engine screen that curves down at the front with
   the lip that goes into a groove in the body.  There is no raised
   section in the middle for the air cleaner.
   I believe this to be the original screen. It's been on the car since at
   least the prior owner's acquisition in 1978.
