Thick paint (aka 'powder coat') will act like an insulator, but it may not matter much depending on how you drive. I was curious awhile back and the ZF was out, so I installed a duplicate temp sensor in our ZF case near the R & P, where presumably loads & temps are max. The other sensor is for oil pan temp, selected with a 3-position rotary switch.
I checked periodically during a 450-mile run from Carson City to 'Vegas at 'somewhat' over 70 mph, and got a temp increase to only 180 degrees F. Since that's not even enough to efficiently boil condensation out of the ZF lube, I stopped worrying about overheating a ZF in a street Pantera. Running an SS event at 170 mph or more, the lube WILL get hotter from friction in the ZF's L.S. and between the R & P. Note it took over 4 hrs in a covered parking lot at the Hotel to cool our lube back down.

OK, this time with the link ;) Picture 17 is not what it was when I first
posed the question and the picture of the grill has been removed
completely. A look down from the top in the front show what I am talking
about sticking out.

Maybe there's an easier way but here's what I have to do to get clear posts. I go to:
http://server.detomasolist.com/mailman/listinfo/detomaso
I then select, "Archives".... then just click on current month and read what is new.
I have zero patience for what I receive daily with all the former messages attached as it takes too long to get to the actual message and figure out who said what about what and who answered what about "it" too.
Hope everyone's having a happy good time thus far this season.
Cheers!

I see it now on image 4. Beats the crap outta me!
It's like the kind of crazy reflector you hang on a job not finished so

Mine was painted too and I'd sure like to strip it, but can't get up the

The first photo doesn't show anything sticking out, unlike the front photo. So, not having seen the original photo you saw, but seeing an "integrated" radar detector in the description, it may be a remote mounted pickup for the detector. I recall many people doing this in the 70's and 80's to avoid being caught with a radar detector. Maybe people still do.

Mine was painted too and I'd sure like to strip it, but can't get up the
enthusiasm to pull it for the job.

With the four Panteras we've had in the family, one ZF was polished, one was powder coated, another was painted in enamel and one was left natural. I've found that the powder coated trans was the easiest to clean and required the least amount of detailing over the years.
The polished ZF required the most work (and busted knuckles) to keep it looking great, while the enamel paint chipped and bubbled. The stock case, well it looked like any bare ZF. The next one that needs a rebuild will definitely get the powder coating treatment.

Interesting. Anybody care to comment on how much heat powdercoat might
retain in the transmission rather than dissipate if painted or polished?

Thick paint (aka 'powder coat') will act like an insulator, but it may
not matter much depending on how you drive. I was curious awhile back
and the ZF was out, so I installed a duplicate temp sensor in our ZF
case near the R & P, where presumably loads & temps are max. The other
sensor is for oil pan temp, selected with a 3-position rotary switch.
I checked periodically during a 450-mile run from Carson City to 'Vegas
at 'somewhat' over 70 mph, and got a temp increase to only 180 degrees
F. Since that's not even enough to efficiently boil condensation out of
the ZF lube, I stopped worrying about overheating a ZF in a street
Pantera. Running an SS event at 170 mph or more, the lube WILL get
hotter from friction in the ZF's L.S. and between the R & P. Note it
took over 4 hrs in a covered parking lot at the Hotel to cool our lube
back down.

Maybe there's an easier way but here's what I have to do to get clear
posts. I go to:
[26]http://server.detomasolist.com/mailman/listinfo/detomaso
I then select, "Archives".... then just click on current month and read
what is new.
I have zero patience for what I receive daily with all the former
messages attached as it takes too long to get to the actual message and
figure out who said what about what and who answered what about "it"
too.
Hope everyone's having a happy good time thus far this season.
Cheers!

Mine was painted too and I'd sure like to strip it, but can't get up

The first photo doesn't show anything sticking out, unlike the front
photo. So, not having seen the original photo you saw, but seeing an
"integrated" radar detector in the description, it may be a remote
mounted pickup for the detector. I recall many people doing this in the
70's and 80's to avoid being caught with a radar detector. Maybe people
still do.

Mine was painted too and I'd sure like to strip it, but can't get up
the
enthusiasm to pull it for the job.

With the four Panteras we've had in the family, one ZF was polished,
one was powder coated, another was painted in enamel and one was left
natural. I've found that the powder coated trans was the easiest to
clean and required the least amount of detailing over the years.
The polished ZF required the most work (and busted knuckles) to keep it
looking great, while the enamel paint chipped and bubbled. The stock
case, well it looked like any bare ZF. The next one that needs a
rebuild will definitely get the powder coating treatment.

Interesting. Anybody care to comment on how much heat powdercoat might
retain in the transmission rather than dissipate if painted or
polished?
