[DeTomaso] Lori's engine exploded!

The early blocks didn't have that machined surface and # was stamped into the rough casting. I think I remember there being a different deck height with the smooth being the taller of the two. I have blocks with rough casting there.....I will see if I have a photo. It is stated in one of the Cleveland build soft back books also. IMSMC Bud #3400 ( Drive it like there is no tomorrow -- for there may not be ! )

That's where mine is located too. A smooth surface just below the head gasket surface, about 0.5"x3" in size or so. See attached pic.
