Forum Listers,

Recently I was asked this question,

"Why are VIN photos required for the registry?"

and since this has come up before I thought I would answer it here for others.

In working with De Tomaso owners, more than 1/3 of owners get their own VIN wrong.

(typos., mis-reads, dirt or debris, bad memory, whatever.)

This occurs for many reasons too numerous to list all, but image the havoc that could result

if someone new comes along, sends in a few fresh photos and indicates their VIN without

a VIN photo for verification, and receives ownership control over an entry (think YOUR car's entry).

KAOS!

Need an example? Say it is Pantera 4580.

They would have the power to change everything, the history record, mileage, owner name history,

details like color and features, etc. and click "update". OOOPS!

Then they realize they have their VIN wrong. So they access 5480, and change some details, OOOPS!

then car 5408 (OOOPS!) , and then 4508 (OOOPS!) , and so on.

They can't remember now what the original (correct) values are for each field they changed, so they can't correct any/every mistake.

You get the idea.. and THIS ACTUALLY HAPPENED, back when there was no verification long long ago. What a mess to clean up!

If you are just sharing some photos, and not trying to obtain owner control, no big deal, a VIN photo is not required, but can be

VERY helpful, and should still be included.

But when anyone is ready take Owner control over an entry, they >MUST< include a VIN photo.

Naturally I want people to capture and include any and ALL the VIN and ID plates the car still wears. This data

helps others in many ways (more on this another time.) Don't be "lazy" and just send the minimum single VIN photo.

If you are going to do it, do it RIGHT!

Now if, for some reason, you desire not to have your VIN photo displayed, I can manually take care of that, and I have

done this for a couple of owners.

So, in summary:

If you share some fresh photos (say to reach the 'shared' access level) no VIN photo is required.

If you seek to obtain Ownership Control, at least one (legible) VIN photo is required, all ID photos strongly preferred.

So what happens if your (owner) update does not contain VIN photos?

Your automatic update stalls, until you provide the required photos.

(There are even a few entries that have been stalled for years!)

If I find your update stalled, I may downgrade it from an "Owner Update" to just a "shared" contribution.

You will find you have reached the 'shared' level and can see the photos of your car (and other cars)

but you will find you don't have the ability to access the owner page, or update 'your' entry.

This is all explained in the 2 FAQs pages. More people should review the FAQs pages, as I get a lot of e-mail

with questions already answered there, and I don't have time to manually answer every (redundant) question.

So now you know!
