Who did the upgrade/format of the old drive. It is inconceivable that a COMPETENT computer professional would not back up the old
drive before formatting it!!!

Have you checked with them to see if they backed up the drive before formatting?

Thanks Doug, I've just checked that setting and it is indeed set to remove it from the server.

My old hard drive has been formatted so that's gone. I guess the only real hope is if Gmail has a copy somewhere despite having that
setting on, something that doesn't sound likely

Charlie.

There is a setting in G-Mail that let's you remove if from the server whenever it is downloaded to Outlook so I would assume that at
some point you set it since it is off by default.

If you still have access to your old hard drive (or a backup of it) search all of it for a .pst file by seraching for *.pst. You
may find the file your are missing.

to prevent this in the future:
Go to <http://www.Microsoft.com> www.Microsoft.com and Search for Personal Folders Backup.
Look for "Outlook 2007/2003/2003 Add-In: Personal Folders Backup" and download it to the foloowing suggested location
and install it.:
           c:\Install\Microsoft\Personal Folders Backup.
After install when you click "File" in the top menu bar, there will be a new selection called "backup". Click on it and set up
a backup schedule. Locate the backup file so that your regular backups will grab it and save it. I set mine for every 2 days.

Charlie,

As Gmail is a web based client I'm not sure why e-mail would be erased when you view or download them in Outlook? I use Hotmail and
have Outlook on my iPad and they do sync, but I can always access either through Outlook or web based they remain a mirror image. My
only suggestion is to contact Gmail tech support.

Julian

Hi all
My laptop had Windows 8 installed yesterday. Before installing it, I dutifully backed up all my files, in anticipation of the
reformatting.

I have 2 e-mail accounts, my work account and the gmail account I am using to write this.

I saved the two Outlook Data Files that were located in Microsoft/Outlook. I handed my computer over for the lobotomy.

I got it back and restored my outlook files, but found that the most recent e-mail in my gmail account was from July, 2011.

Long story, but I now see that the Outlook Data File from my gmail account has "date last modified" of July 2011. This must mean
that at some point, Outlook began storing e-mails elsewhere, but I don't know where, and at this point I suppose it doesn't really
matter.

When you link your Gmail account to Outlook, when you send/receive and the e-mail is downloaded to Outlook, it disappears from the
web-application of Gmail. It appears on the cloud until you connect, at which point it gets presumably erased.

I've apparently lost 100% of my e-mails. All the planning for Le Mans Classic, confirmations of payment, confirmation of schedules.
We're trying to sell some property on the Mediterranean and we have agreed to meet people there in 2 weeks and again other in 4
weeks. Their data is all in Outlook. I use it to store a lot of data, and I'm really kind of screwed if I can't get it back.

Any suggestions?

If you are going on the LMC trip, I have your e-mail addresses and payment info in the famous Excel sheet, but not a single e-mail
else. Thanks!
