[DeTomaso] Shifting

Hey Rob, that wouldn't have happened if your wife had been driving - or would you have been hanging on to 'something' for dear life? ?:) ? ?If your wife hasn't been driving the car she should, just so she knows what the car will do.

The point was it was the clutch master, not the slave and the heat was not in the front.?

I propose that if the fluid is old, it may boil quicker. I know that on a spirited the Tail of the Dragon run, 'somehow' my ?parking brake got pulled up and my right rear parking brake caliper stuck slightly even when released. I blame my wife grabbing for anything to hold on to during the run or her purse getting snagged in it. Either way, it was a passenger thing. ?Anyhow, all of my brakes suffered from boiling in the right rear. If the fluid is compromised, there may be enough give to allow shifting until lit gets hot.

Everything back there gets hot. I recorded 180F lube temp in my ZF during a 5 hr run to 'Vegas one year. That hole (or holes if you have an early car) in the bellhousing is not for peering inside; its a cooling/ventillation port for the clutch. Plugging it with a piece of plastic is not a good idea except during work around the back end where things could fall inside. FWIW- J Deryke

I had a friends 72 that would loose slave travel when it warmed up. It got so bad you had to double pump the clutch to shift when hot.
      ?
It turned out to be the clutch master, I did not think it would get that hot in there.

Following up on this question from last week, as I also have problems shifting into reverse AFTER the car has been driven for ~ 30 minutes (is well warmed up).? I have had the problem since I owned the car, and would really like to fix it this year.

It will always go into reverse when the engine is off, so turning off the engine, shifting into reverse is how I have been getting around the problem. Shifting into all other gears is smooth, whether going up or down.

I replaced a bad clutch slave cylinder about 5 years ago with the stock OEM unit.? I recently saw that an upgraded stainless steel slave is available - would that improve the situation?? If not, how do I adjust the clutch so it disengages completely when hot?? I plan to change the fluid and bleed the system again, but have done so many times before without an improvement.

          thanks for your advice,

Its job is to bring the gear you are going into, to the matching speed so that the gear does notgrind. When a clutch is dragging a bit you over work the synchros to prevent gear grinding. Try it with the engine not running.? Can you shift into reverse easier?? Ifyou can with the engine stopped, but you can't with the engine running, I'd suspect the clutch.? ?And then, the next most obvious thing is adjusting the shifter.? Lots of things to do there, and it is likely documented well on the various P-carsites. ?--?
