John,
Courtesy of my wonderful wife who has come up with some incredible
gifts, last October I got a couple of laps at the F1 track in Austin
(COTA) in one of Jordan Racing's 2005 V-10 F1 cars that actually ran
that season. Unlike the stretch Indy 2-seat cars, this car had a seat
added to either side of the driver in what was the air intake side pods.
They added scoops over the passengers' heads like the driver has to
get air. Obviously, the engine is detuned (they don't say that, but it
has to be the case---the cars also had starters added) and they only run
a few laps at a time so overheating is apparently not a problem.
I had very high expectations for the ride. I have stick time in two
high performance aircraft (T-38 and F-4) where 6 and 7 Gs and extreme
precision are the norm (the F-4 is the epitome of a procedure
aircraft---get the airspeed and angle of attach wrong, and DoD sends two
guys in uniform to your house).
The lead driver was Didier Theys. The ride is hard to describe. The
acceleration was about what I expected because I expected so much. The
cornering was 10 times what I expected. The lateral Gs were incredible.
But the acceleration and cornering turned out to be wimpy...compared
to the brakes. I was speechless. The first time he hit the brakes, it
was 10 miles past where I thought he was going to, and it felt like we
hit a brick wall. Coming down the back straight into the 90 degree
left-hander in the Turn 15 complex, I thought we hit a Navy carrier
safety net. I also thought my internal organs were going to bust out of
my chest onto the front of the car. I still can't get over how the car
and its components put that together. The brakes, the chassis, the
suspension, and the tires. It was incredible.
I don't have access to the list at the moment or I would have replied to it.
Richard

Pretty impressive. A real sense of the small margin for error and
required manliness.
