>>>Last weekend was pretty bad I hear--there was a Giants game, 49ers game
and America's Cup going on all at the same time, plus lots of looky-loos
wanting to drive over the new Bay Bridge for the first time. I wouldn't
assume this coming weekend would be nearly as bad.

>>>If you're committed to driving south (not a bad idea by any means),
drive down the coast highway (Highway 1), through Monterey, Big Sur, etc. and go
see Hearst Castle. That's an epic drive, routinely voted as one of the
best roads in the world (although you won't drive it fast--it's not a
'performance' drive, it's a look-out-the-window-at-all-the-pretty-stuff drive).
Get a convertible if you can.

>>>If you're going to stay in Union Square (which is a good thing by the
way), there is only one way to Berkeley, which is over the Bay Bridge.
Traffic won't really be an issue on the weekend. You'll run into some traffic
coming into the city on Friday though--it will be murder once you get into
the city as there are loads of people heading home for the weekend. But that
will only last for a few miles, and you'll be exiting before most of them
who will be crossing the bridge.

If you want to avoid the traffic, just take city streets through the city
to Union Square. Go up to Twin Peaks, the highest point in the city, where
there's a scenic overlook that lets you see everything.

SF is arguably the nicest city in the USA--and I'm not saying that just
because I happen to be from there. I generally hate cities, but if I have to
be in one, S.F. is the obvious choice. :>)
