[DeTomaso] What Do You Tell People - It is a DeTomaso

I’m not sure if some of you are joking or not, but some of the replies here are
scary.

I recently had an owner tell me that he felt some Pantera owners feel
completely comfortable degrading their own car!?!
 
I couldn’t fathom that but it appears to be true. 
 
Kit car? International car?  

Do we all feel that our cars, and whatever passion we have for them, are at least
worth a historically correct, if minimal, answer? 

 
Usually, we’ll see a somewhat bland or boring car brand
contort or embellish their own history for the sake of excitement and pride. Small
contributions or achievements in motorsport or other competition will get
celebrated by their owners.

 
We don’t even need to resort to that having such a rich
history already. Yet, it seems that it isn’t being discussed or shared very
often at all.
 
There are plenty of reasons causing this void…the initial Lincoln-Mercury
distribution in this country, poor media response (in the USA only), the
toxic Ford involvement or the sparingly available historical reference materials
amongst others. 
 
I met Brian Redman at a vintage event last year. He was
feverishly, but sincerely, signing autographs with a small crowd. One by one, he
was moving everyone along. 
 
I brought an old book and opened it to a picture of the
Detomaso 505-38 F1 car. Instead of moving me along, he actually paused and read
part of the chapter that described his time on the F1 team. He said it was a
good memory and wished they would’ve stuck with Williams for more success. 
 
I don’t think having Brian Redman involved with your marque’s
F1 team is anything to be ashamed of. I wonder if the late Mike Parkes (famous
Ferrari driver and engineer) would’ve considered his Detomaso contribution as
worthy?
 
It seems that some Detomaso owners have felt the need to
make excuses for what their car should be compared to. The irony is that there
is nothing to be ashamed about and quite a LOT
to be proud of. 
 
It’s a Detomaso, designed and built in Italy with a great
heritage in design and competition.

Is that not true?   Or am I wrong about that--is Corvette still, 
technically, a Chevrolet?
