[DeTomaso] To Steal a De Tomaso?

Chuck,
This is just a guess but I think "cloning" might be a name for the scam I
described where someone steals a car and uses it to "build" a car that he
has acquired documents for. In the case I described we bought a land
crusier that had been stolen and had the vin tags removed and replaced with
vin tags from a wrecked car that the DP's had purchased at a salvage
auction just to get the title and vin tags. This happened to us before the
existence of Car Fax. This types of fraud is much harder to perpetrate now
because Car Fax (as well as some other dats bases) provide info on salvage
titles. Unfortunately services like Car Fax require 17 digit vin #'s so
Panteras as well as many other older cars could potentially still be
vulnerable to this type of "cloning"
