The hazard comes from allowing the connections to be loose.
At least one Pantera vendor sells an aftermarket ammeter which they say is
superior to the stock one, claiming that the stock one is a fire hazard.
Nonsense. The hazard comes from the way it is hooked up. The act of
removing the old one and installing a new one (properly) eliminates the potential
hazard. Checking your connections and making them tight on the old one
does the same thing.
There have been more than a few electrical fires due to owners adding
circuits to the back side of the ammeter (it's a good place to draw power for
accessories) and failing to ensure the connections were made tightly. But
that's not the ammeter's fault.
