It sounds like a blown head gasket. You could do a compression test but
that would only indicate a blown head gasket if it broke at a piston area,
but not at an oil/ water break.
When you start it, which side blows steam or blue smoke, that would be the
side that I pulled the head on first.
If it is blown, it should be easy to see.  If don't have to fix both sides,
but you should.
If your intake is stock, this is the perfect opportunity to get a new
lighter one and a new carb.
Lots of opinion here on choices, just ask.
If you decide to reuse the old heads, again a perfect opportunity to get
the heads refurbished.  With 20k miles, your bottom end should be fine.
