[DeTomaso] distributor

Brad
I had this problem in my car.
The guys that talk about the debris in the oil could be correct.
If there is something in the oil, it could jam the pump and shear the pin.
Now with all the sheared pin pieces in the oil- they can also jam the pump
and shear the pin.

But I am more of a risk taker, so I installed a spiral pin that has a lot
more strength and won't shear as easily.
I installed a magnetic oil plug and hoped for the best.
In my case it worked fine and I ran the engine for years before I took it
out for a new engine.

I would rather take the risk, than remove the engine unless it has totally
blown up.
351 C are not that valuable to me. You can always build a better one when
you know you have to.
If you take it apart to inspect it, you have the dilemma of now what do you
do -put an old engine together or rebuild it?
I take the risk and if it blows then you know you have to rebuild a better
one.

Rich

Dear Brad,

Let me see if I understand this: you have bilateral leg
weakness from a neurological problem; you are a Pantera owner for two years
and you have had multiple problems with the distributor shaft pin? If that
is right, then I would ask if the past repairs have looked past replacing
the pin? Did the mechanic look at the oil pump? From what little I know
about Clevelands, either your mechanic has been overlooking a possible
persistent fundamental problem in the oil pump or he has been replacing the
distributor shaft pin with something not up to the job.

More than one bona fide Ford mechanic has implicated the oil
pump as the actual generator of most of the distributor shaft pin failure
problems. I am just an amateur.

                        Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

hello my fellow Panter-eans i am needing help to solve a problem with my
distributor. here is my problem the split pin that secures the drive gear to
the distributor shaft keeps shearing for some reason. I welcome ideas and
suggestion even the correct answer to fix it, this distributor problem
needs to go away, being stranded at an intersection and partially paralyzed
from waist down is no fun no matter how cool a car you drive. I have owned
my 71 pantera just over two years and i have dreamed of it for ever it
seems. thank you for your help sincerely brad
