[DeTomaso] Stock seats upholstery kit

No, even if I took all the foam away completely I couldn't fit the cover
over the steel backing plate that defines the backside of the headrest.
The backing plate is about 1.5" inches wider than the zipper opening.
You can't wiggle the plate through the opening either as the headrest
mounting pin has to protrude through the cover in a hole which is
centered along the zipper. The only part I tried fitting so far was the
back rest and I stuffed it under my bed when I found the headrest hole
mismatch. It's been waiting for a while now.

It does look like the 71 had a thicker headrest however the thinner ones
look way better. Have you considered doing the recover with a bit less
foam? Have you installed any of the upholstery yet?

Hi Tomas,

It is funny you mentioned Mike since he received a pair of head rest
covers from SACC Restorations and was very happy with them. In fact,
there is a write-up about him having the headrests recovered with our
units on his site.

Like, I said. I have over 100 headrests covered to date without a single
complaint. I am not saying your complaint isn't valid, just not sure
what to do since others don't seem to have an issue.

Take care, Scott

I think it's most probable that the pattern parts were not what they
were supposed to be.

I found this pic of Mike's car that is around 100 serial #s from mine.

http://www.panteraplace.com/page6.html

They look very much like mine.

These are much slimmer and seem more likely to fit the pouches I have.

With the number of seat models around it can be a simple mistake in what
model year a seat is or maybe even a case of swapping the headrests
between seats.

Hi Tomas,

No, that is not my intent. As I mentioned below, there seems to be a
difference from one Pantera to another regarding the thickness of the
headrests.

"As far as the headrest are concerned. When I first made the seat
covers, they were made from an existing 71 Pantera where we disassembled
the seats and made the patterns to match the 71 exactly. I have noticed
over the years, that some headrests appear to be over stuffed or
stretched way too much. This problem is going to be compounded in
leather because the leather will not stretch. We use the same headrest
pattern for all our seats and over 100 headrests have been covered. I
have not had a single complaint regarding the headrest until today. I am
not saying the complaint isn't legitimate. I am saying that I believe,
after seeing may different Pantera's over the years, that some headrests
were built thicker than others. But again, Leather is going to make the
problem more pronounced."

I am sorry you are having issues but it seem to be an isolated issue. I
sold you the upholstery almost FOUR years ago and this is the first I
have heard of an issue.

Regards, Scott

With all respect, do you manufacture the vinly covers with the intent to
have them stretch to twice the size of the cut out piece? The original
cover shows no sign of stretching which should be evident in the backing
fabric.

Hello Everyone,

Some things to note. Tomas ordered FULL LEATHER despite my
recommendation to go partial leather due to the degree of difficulty
with full leather installation. Leather does not stretch like vinyl
does, making installation VERY difficult. My recommendation for any
customer that wants leather, is to go partial leather. The vinyl, now
days is so good, it is hard to tell the vinyl from the leather. With
partial leather, the seating surface is leather and the sides and back
are matching vinyl. The vinyl will stretch, leather will not, making
installation more difficult. I don't know if Tomas had them installed by
a professional upholstery person, but if not, I wouldn't try this
myself.

Full leather for the 71 seat is not a big mover for the reasons I just
stated, but I do know of one other person that purchased full leather
and had them installed. As far as I know, they were happy with the
results. Ben Chu had them professionally installed. I copied Ben to see
if he has any feedback regarding the finished look and if there were any
fitment issues.

As far as the headrest are concerned. When I first made the seat covers,
they were made from an existing 71 Pantera were we disassembled the
seats and made the patterns to match the 71 exactly. I have noticed over
the years, that some headrests appear to be over stuffed or stretched
way too much. This problem is going to be compounded in leather because
the leather will not stretch. We use the same headrest pattern for all
our seats and over 100 headrests have been covered. I have not had a
single complaint regarding the headrest until today. I am not saying the
complaint isn't legitimate. I am saying that I believe, after seeing may
different Pantera's over the years, that some headrests were built
thicker than others. But again, Leather is going to make the problem
more pronounced.

I would really like to hear from Ben on his experience with his Full
Leather 71 Pantera Seat Upholstery installation.

The list will reject the mail but here are some pics. The headrest pouch
is a little smaller than stock seen from straight ahead. Seen from the
side the seams are about 35 mm apart on the new pouch and 50-65 mm on
the old pouch. There's a steel backing plate in the headrest that's
larger than the new pouch outline so getting it inside the pouch is not
possible. The seat back cover has a hole where the headrest mounts. The
position differs by about 20 mm relative to the seam and moving the
cover around that much in that position is not likely going to look
good. With the new cover on the seat back you can't see the mount
through the hole.

I'd suggest to contact Scott at SACC restorations, he is particular
about his products which are usually top notch for quality & fitment. As
Tomas' issue was a 'few years' ago, I'd see if Scott has resolved any
prior problems with the '71 upholstery.
