For an ammeter, the way to go would be to have an ammeter with a remote mounted shunt.  This would eliminate
having heavy gauge wires running around in "circles" through the car.  The shunt could be located near the 
battery or the starter solenoid (but not in the battery cable to the starter solenoid), and two very small gauge wires 
would be run from the shunt to the new ammeter.  Everything else (except the starter) would be connected to the
shunt instead of the ammeter.

Now, if some one made a stock appearing Veglia ammeter to work with a remote mounted shunt.............
