I generally keep up on prices but R-12 had gotten away from me. The last
time I looked it was about $35.00 a can. Well since I am getting ready to
change compressors on one of my cars I decided to give it a charge with 2
cans of Freeze 12, a little oil and some leak dye to see if I had other
leaks. Talking to a local about Freeze 12 and its equivalent R4??, I was
informed that R-12 has gotten cheaper than Freeze-12 because there is no
current demand. Sure enough you can buy a case of R-12 for $100.00 for 12
cans. One of the locals has had 3 cases for sale @ $100.00 each, for about
a year. I went by and he had sold 2 and given one away with the promise
that he would be paid or bartered. He did have 2 cans and an oil charge
that he sold me for $20.00.

I am thinking that it may be better for me to do the R-12 on my two cars
rather than worrying about converting them to R-134. I understand that
R-134 may be on the way out here in the Obamanation in the near future.

I also found that you can buy virtually any Freon without a license as long
as a license holder is the one that uses the contents.

Interesting how things change,
jerry
