I spent years flying around a paint supplier to the automotive industry.
It was always curious how we spent years painting cars then wake up one
day and clear coat won't stick to white 199x chevy cars...or whatever.
The underlying problem in paint issues every year is the EPA requiring
lower and lower VOC's requiring yearly improvements an changes. Just when
you get it figured out, you are pushed to change it again.
Water born paints consist of a water based base coat but a solvent based
clear coat. Ironically some of the worst VOC's are in the clear coat.
The car industry spent years getting water based paints to work on trim
pieces before ever tackling the body. We hauled thousands (it seemed)
bumpers where technique was compared and flaws discussed.
The problem in the beginning is paint guns could not spray water based
paint.....well they could but as soon as the trigger was released the tip
would dry and clog before the next part came down the line. Their solution
was to create a gun where water cycled through the head keeping it wet
till the next piece came down the line.
At this point small car shops were not going to be fixing or repainting
with waterborne paints and repairs were not going to match as well. Even
when the color was right on, it was just..different.
This was years ago. The advancements in the waterborne chemistry has made
water based base coat very spray able for even the home painter.
Waterborne paints have seen to be amassing a good reputation but it is
still young as a paint done by hobbyist. None the less the reputation has
been good.
What is ironic is, as I said, the worst VOC's are in the clear coat and it
is still solvent based.
