Hi Charles, I have the same problem, & with an early T-Bird cable. I also replaced a COMPLETE cable at a repair shop and it still did the same thing (bouncing around in the speedo). The shop owner sent the speedo to a repair shop in california & they sent it back saying nothing is wrong with the speedo. There has to be some sort of F I X ? Myron (the other guy in Cleveland)

Subject: [DeTomaso] Tic-tic-tic from my new speedo cable
Hi All
Long story, but I finally connected my new speedometer cable after my old
one broke last year.
First drive with the car and I hear a "tic-tic-tic" from the speedo, and the
needle is rather unsteady. At first I thought I had a rod knocking or
something, but it is not engine related, it is speed related, and it comes
from the speedometer.
This is typically a sign of impending speedo cable failure, right? Is there
anything that can be done or adjusted? I don't think I have cross threaded
anything anywhere...
Thanks!
