[DeTomaso] Edelbrock carbs

Bill - I am very suspicious of anything being advertised as "perfect for all
applications out of the box".

I would only believe something could be perfect if it was a stock
configuration of carb for a bone-stock engine.

I paid a rather large premium for a Holley 700 that was, quote, "Dyno tuned
for a Pantera".

In retrospect I should have recognized that this was an impossible feature.
What is a Pantera? Is it a stock, 1971 high compression Cleveland? A watered
down 74? Stock cam? Hydraulic or solid lifter? There is no one-size-fits-all
solution for a carb.

Out of the box, my "dyno-tuned for a Pantera" carb ran terribly. I spent a
lot of time swapping all the components that had been optimized for a
Pantera and eventually threw in the towel and sent it to a carb specialist.

The carb specialist asked my 5 pages worth of questions about my application
- all engine parameters, gear ratio, car weight, etc etc.

When I got the carb back, and when it had been set up FOR MY SPECIFIC
APPLICATION, it was indeed perfect.

One person's opinion:
1) Plenty of people run Holleys and are happy with them. Mine doesn't surge
or run rich.
2) Going to an Edelbrock may or may not solve your problem. The problem
isn't the brand of carb, it is the setup, or there is something
wrong/broken/stuck/plugged with yours
3) Either an Edelbrock or a Holley can be made to work well on your car. But
I'd argue that, especially if your car starts to deviate from a stock
configuration, getting the carb set up right is more important than the
brand.
4) At least one person is sceptical of any carb working perfectly out of the
box, unless it is an exact replacement.

I just got home from the Rod Run in Tenn. 1362 was a big hit gathering lots
of attention. I had my Holley carb tuned just right when I left home, but
when I got stuck in traffic for a few minutes it started running rich, then
on the way home was surging. I had one of these Edelbrocks
http://www.jegs.com/i/Edelbrock/350/1412/10002/-1 on a SBC that was perfect
out of the box. I tempted to scrap the Holly DP and go with this. Any
opinions out there? Bill 1362
