Konrad I'll suggest that personally, I have great difficulty telling
ignition problems from fuel problems. Check the spark quality too by pulling a
plug wire (any wire) and hooking it to a spare grounded plug. Don't leave the
wire bare as that sometimes blows electronic modules (if you run one) from
excess spark load.
And there are still engines out there with single roll-pins in the
distributor drive gears. Sometimes they don't completely shear and instead crack &
allow timing to retard. The same effect happens with a jumped timing chain.
Finally, a few of the stock ceramic resistors are failing from age- it's that
white rectangular thingy on the firewall next to the regulator. As I
remember, you had a '71?
