Instead of using the old cable to pull the new cable, I'd suggest
something strong and flexible like a 8' section of aircraft cable with
loops in the ends
that you can connect the new cable to when you're ready pull it through.

By doing this, you'll have the old cable in hand to use to construct your
new cable
by exact size instead of guessing, plus, you'll best be able to judge
exactly how much longer
or shorter you'll want to make it depending upon your goals ( like
relocating the battery or solenoid )

as far as size, Mike didn't say and I don't know for a fact, my best guess
would be 02 gauge.

If you are making it, in addition to crimping the ends on, a little solder
couldn't hurt.
