[DeTomaso] MME Engine Failure

I had exactly that scenario on my small block Chevy in my Vega 20+ years 
ago. Harland Sharp Roller Rockers. The shaft holding the roller tip failed. The 
roller "rolled" out and the rocker body came down on the disk, missing the valve 
stem, released the retainers. The valve dropped in and bounced of the top of the 
piston....repeatedly. I shut the engine down quickly. Lifted the valve, 
pressurized the cylinder, and replaced the pieces. Dodged a bullet and 
everything was fine. Very lucky. Thanks for the help John DeFazio.

Oh... and later the little metal piece that went inside the roller tip made it's 
way to the oil pump, locked it up, split the shaft down the middle and bent 
over. Game over. engine out.

Just wondering, if the roller end of the rocker failed, would what was left of 
the rocker hit the valve spring retainer pushing it down so that the retainer 
locks would pop out and drop the valve?

In the case of the second engine, Mikael Hass' engine, no. 

Or it may have had them, I don't know, but htat wasn't the cause of failure.


It would appear that a roller rocker failed, which allowed the valve to drop
into the engine. It wasn't the classic problem of a stock, two-piece valve
separating, the failure mode was different.

I don't want to appear sinacle in any way but when are you gentlemen going 
to realize that it does not matter what kind of reputation a person or shop 
has if there is a hack out in the shop or if they use substandard parts to 
save a buck.  Now I believe that the owner himself is more than likely an 
intelligent person. It is when you get all the BEAN COUNTERS in there do 
problems arise.
