Is there anything that can be added to a freon system with freon other  
than freon?  How do you convert a freon system?

Freeze 12.  It is available at NAPA

While Freeze 12 IS an EPA approved automotive replacement for R12 systems, it 
IS NOT approved to mix with R12.

EPA rules, which any reputable shop will follow unless they want to risk a $25K fine,
require all the R12 to be removed prior to filling with Freeze 12. A lot of shops
have tossed their R12 machines years ago.

Will Freeze 12 work when added to R12? Probably. How long??

But re-read what I posted earlier about 'bastard' systems. Create a mixed system
at home and you will have a system that NO shop will agree to work on. And they WILL
do a sniffer test prior to doing work, especially on our older cars.

Then they would need a dedicated machine just to recover the mix - they cannot vent it to atmosphere - 
and few, if any, shops will invest in such a dedicated unit.

However, what you do in your own garage is your own business.

Just understand the consequences.
