[DeTomaso] Darn speedo cable

John - that's about what I remember from my old '72. I think i disconnected
and connected it in under 60 seconds.

I'll go measure the cable tomorrow. I couldn't compare it to the original
cable as my original broke in two..

It's too early to know if the overall length is too long, as I've only
gotten to try to connect the speed end so far, and haven't even thought
about connecting the otehr end to the zf...

Subject: [DeTomaso] Darn speedo cable

Hi Charlie,

What may be happening, is that the distance from the crimp ring on the
speedo cable (the one that
is rotated by the ZF) to the end of the speedo may be too long. When that
cable is pushed all of the
way into the cable's housing, the speedo cable should protrude between 3/8"
and 5/8". If it protrudes
more than that, then the fitting on the end of the speedo cable housing will
not seat on the speedo
head's "nipple" (the part with the male threads). The flange of the part
that is crimped onto the cable
housing should contact the end of the speedo head's nipple.

The other possibility is that the overall length of the speedo cable (the
cable, not the housing) is too long,
and it is bottoming in the right angle drive.

FWIW, I reached under my dash and disconnected my speedo cable in about ten
seconds, took some pics,
and reconnected the cable in about another 15 seconds. This was done with
nothing removed from the
car......i.e. seat, dash, and steering column were all bolted in place.

I will send you some pics.

John
