The acorn nuts in question incorporate a rubber seal, to prevent fluid 
which seeps past the threads of the stud, from leaking onto the ground.   A 
washer won't help that--in fact anything between the face of the back cover and 
the rubber seal on the nut will defeat the seal and allow it to leak.
