How about this comparision then....

In 1972 a Pantera cost about 11,000. You could buy a top of the line Lincoln for about 11,000.

Today you can buy a top of the line Lincoln for about 65,000 .... therefore to be the "same" kind of car. a new Pantera should run about the same??

Just a thought....

Well, lets be fair.  The inflation factor may get you a car equivalent to
the one you purchased in 1972 for $60,000. And by golly, you can by a great
'72 Pantera today for $60,000

However, today's cars are an order of magnitude far superior in many
aspects.  One would assume that this time around you may get a car that is
100,000 miles between tune-ups verses 30000 for a total rebuild.  You may
not see rust for 10 years verses three seasons.  The AC may actually work
and the radiators actually cool.  The chassis flex may be minimized to
enhance handling and steering effort reduced at slow speeds for those in
need.  Accident survivability would be improved with adequate restraint
systems and air bags.  The glove box may not double as a water collector and
the climate control systems may move forward from the stone age.  Driving
lights may extend beyond 10 candlewatt and seats may be adjustable.  My
point is that it ought to be a lot more car than we had in 1972.  I am not
defending it's eventual cost or whether the enhancements will be perceived
as real or worthwhile by buyers.  I am only stating that with govt mandates
and the rising bar of expectations by buyers based on modern car
experiences, ( where are those cup holders and GPS?) the inflation point is
interesting and perhaps effectively plays on peoples emotions to make them
feel they are getting screwed; but it is misleading.
