Thanks Julian. The first car I painted was also with a conventional gun and the paint laid down perfect. It has been a steeper learning curve with HVLP.

I have DeVilbiss JGA-635G and successfully painted one car and most of my garage...... ;>)

On a more serious note and FWIW, the gun above is HVLP which is supposed to give less overspray waste, but it took some getting used to to get an even coat and non orange peel finish. That said once I got the hang of it the final product was great and no one would believe it was a home paint job in my garage. For small repaint and touch up jobs I still seem to obtain a better finish more easily with a std (non HVLP) gun.

We sprayed PPG Concept Acrylic Urethane on our nicely sanded Primer Filler 2K on Saturday and ended up with lots of orange peel. I suspect a combination of temps slightly below the limits of the reducer, a Chinese HVLP knock off and any other number of elements which can influence such things contributed.

However, we have more paint projects on the horizon and would like to acquire a better HVLP gun. Preferably suited for base and clear coats. The idea of one gun for both and a change of tips is fine. We'd probably continue with the Chinese knock-offs for primer filler.
