[DeTomaso] radiator deal

Actually Richard, the last thing you want to do is open up the by-pass
holes.
All the coolant that goes through the bypass circuit doesn't go through the
radiator, which speeds warm up. After the engine is warm, any amount
bypassing the rad through the heater or the bypass hole reduces the coolant
system's ability. It can be a substantial effect if it's a large amount and
is very undesirable. In fact if you pull the special 351C stat (with the hat
to plug the bypass when it opens) as Jack suggested and don't block the
bypass hole in the block, you are almost certain to have overheating
problems. I think Jack has told us before that he runs an aftermarket water
pump with the bypass blocked off, so it might work fine for him in his car.

Just curious, has anybody tried opening up the by-pass holes, this would
slow down warm up a little but it would reduce the restriction. I have never
had a cooling problem but I am at the start of building a stroker motor.

I disagree with the last part. The main flow restriction in a Pantera is
from the thermostat. You can verify this easily in your own Pantera by
removing the thermostat entirely (no other changes) and driving your Pantera
on a
hot day. You will have trouble getting the water temp to 150 F! This is
regardless of what radiator you have. One member from AZ was amazed to find
that
while running in his stock GT-5 (brass radiator, stock water pump and
factory pusher fans but no thermostat) , he only showed 150-170F- in June in
Las
Vegas while thrashing it hard on track in 2nd & 3rd gear. Adding ONLY a 190F
thermostat shot his operating temperatures up to 210-220 on an easy 500 mile
road trip up to my place in northern NV. Try it and see. Cheers- J DeRyke
