Thanks to all those who inputted to my bolt question. 
 
As to the bolt direction ------- I'm curious. It would seem that if a nut was to come off and the bolt was to back out, it would be better to not have it contact the ZF.

Some would argue that the smart/easy thing to do is to avoid buying a car that is around 40 years old in the first place. But those people will never know the simple joy of being thrilled that the&%*$ turning signal FINALLY works correctly!
