[DeTomaso] ZF Inspection vs vent

With one hole into an otherwise pretty much sealed up cavity I can't see
enough air circulation through that hole to make a notable difference
cooling wise.

Subject: [DeTomaso] ZF Inspection vs vent

Hi all,
I've been engaged in some lively discussions with a few fellow PCNC'ers
about the function of the hole in the ZF.  I think most of us (including me
and apparently our vendors) have assumed it is an inspection port, so we buy
these $20 pieces of plastic in a variety of pretty colors to cover that big
hole up lest we drop a wrench,  bottle cap,  valve cover nut or whatever
down in there to never be seen again.

But there is counter-view, borne of a Mangusta owner,  that claims this hole
is actually an important VENT for the ZF, and that covering this hole
effectively reduces the airflow and builds up unwanted heat. Now, if you
know any Mangusta owners, then you know....well, let's not go there.  But
none-the-less, it seems a screen based device that both covers AND vents the
ZF would be the best of both possible worlds.

Has anyone come up with such a device? Any thoughts on the above ranting?
