The factory Ford air cleaners are very susceptible to this sort of thing; I 
suspect the aftermarket round open filters are rather less so.   However, 
the real solution is to modify your engine cover per the TSBs or get a later 
one that incorporates a proper cover.

Scratch that.   The REAL solution is to not let the car live outside in the 
rain????   Even if a garage isn't an option, at least a temporary shelter 
of some sort should be an option?   I'm talking a PVC and nylon 'garage'; 
they're pretty cheap and easy to set up?

I know that back when the cars were new, Ford had to replace several 
engines under warranty for exactly the problem you encountered.   Maybe you got 
lucky, or maybe you've got a bent rod and don't know it?   I'd be inclined to 
check rather than hoping for the best....
