[DeTomaso] The bane of the early Pantera

Ya got to wonder if back in 1971 there was no rain in Italy? I wonder when our cars were first sold here in to US if no one ever drove them in the rain? With as many of us that talk about the windshield leaking on the right side, did they not leak back in the 70s? DeTomaso or Ford never heard about these problems?

Totally preventable, but the engine cover on an early Pantera does not
have a hood over the air cleaner.  Those of us on the East coast may
have noticed a bit of rain last week.  Unfortunately my car was stored
outside for the duration.

I uncovered my car to make it out to a car show and Bump!  The motor
wouldn't turn over.  Hydrolock.  I removed all the spark plugs and 6
of the 8 had water in the cylinders.  I spun the engine to evacuate
the water and it fired right up after reinstalling the plugs.  No
noticable water in the oil, thank goodness!  I'm hoping that enough
cylinders were close to lock at the same time and I haven't bent a
rod, and it seems to run fine... I went to the car show and back
without incident.

So.  I do have a plastic trash can lid to cover the air cleaner when
it rains.  I just have to remember to put it on *every* *time* I park
outside.
